To the fire truck

Slam on the brakes
Park the car
Grab the gear from the boot
Shoes off. Overalls on.
Left boot, right boot.
Grab turnout coat and helmet
Check for gloves and clamber aboard
Sirens wailing, lights flashing
People shouting
Another crash on Somerton Road

A ute. A car.
Fire trucks. Ambulance. Police.
SES. Traffic control.

Disconnect the battery
Hold the IV
Two on the hoses
Old man driver looking up at me.
Pray for me legs, he says

Make up still on from the night before
Panda eyes under the yellow helmet
“God, you're beautiful” he says.
“Pray for me legs”

Two off in ambulances
Medi chopper lands in the field
Hold the IV as we put him aboard
Off into the sky as I pray for his legs

It's many years later
So how are his legs?
Can he feel them again?
Can he walk?

What happens to the people we help?
We never hear after we get back on the truck
